Arriving in Edinburgh

Disclaimer: This was before lockdown restrictions were put in place.

We left our house at 9:30pm and walked with our luggage to the nearest Underground station. We caught the Northern Line to Euston, which took about 40 minutes. Our whole tube was empty, which was lucky because I accidentally let go of my suitcase while the tube was speeding through the tunnel. I had to chase it down the carriage!

When we got to Euston we were allowed in the first-class lounge. This meant that we got comfy seats, WiFi, free drinks, and delicious sour cream and chive pretzels! Our train, the Caledonian Sleeper left at ten past eleven at night, so we made our way onto the platform about half an hour before then. The sleeping compartments could accommodate 1-2 passengers, so because there were 5 of us, I got my own room. Unfortunately, my compartment was on another carriage to the rest of my family, and some carriages split off the train to go to different destinations! Luckily the guard swapped my room with someone else’s, so I didn’t end up in Cardiff rather than Edinburgh!

This was our train, a display screen inside, and the view from Dad’s compartment.

I didn’t get much sleep on the train, but the compartments were very nice and we even got amenities bags. At around 6:30 the next morning, we had breakfast in the dining car while travelling through Yorkshire (I had a smoothie bowl). And only a couple of hours later we were in Edinburgh. We could see snowy mountains in the distance, which was very exciting because my Dad is the only one in the family that has ever seen snow! We got off at Edinburgh Waverley and walked up to the apartment that we had booked. It was freezing cold!

Our apartment was still being prepared so we spent about seven hours walking around until it was ready. We visited an old graveyard which is said to have inspired some of the scenes in Harry Potter, we went to the Museum of Edinburgh and climbed a really tall hill. Here are some photos from said hill over the course of the day.

  1. Snow! That’s really cool. Well, freezing cold, actually. I liked Edinburgh, but it was wet when we were there. Not so cold – just wet. And I bought a tartan scarf, too. It must be the thing to do.

    1. We had it cold and wet! But I guess you did go in Summer and I went in Winter! We looked in lots of tartan shops, but we ended up going to the one by the castle.

      1. I think that must be the same shop – on the right at the top of the Royal Mile, just before the Castle.
